What are some considerations before migrating an app to the cloud?

There are close to 120 considerations that we take into account before we start a migration. These range from the specifics of each tier of your app to the networking requirements to the identities used in your app.

  1. Something as simple as the identity model used by your app or customizations of your IIS / apache modules could affect your migration strategy severely.
  2. How are you planning to secure your cloud hosted apps? How will you be alerted about security incidents on your cloud infrastructure?
  3. Have you thought about data protection? Specifically, how you would leverage IAM and built in data encryption technologies (KMS, Secrets Management)? Have you thought about Threat Detection?
  4. Is your on premises network infrastructure ‘cloud connectivity’ ready? Do you have the appropriate hardware and software versions?
  5. How will your cloud hosted applications continue work in the case of a data center D.R scenario? How will your active directory continue to resolve DNS as well as authenticate users in the case of D.R.?
  6. Do you have a current devops deployment model in place? Do you use hardened OS images? Do you use containerized devops?
  • Our pre-migration checklist sets you up for success. Contact Cloud Migration Architect before you attempt to move a single app to the public cloud.
  • How do you handle refactoring, microservices and Containerization?
  • We have certified Docker experts who have built out large scale container deployments for both on-premises (Swarm Hosting) as well as Kubernetes clusters on GKE, EKS and AKS.  CloudMigrationArchitect.com can assist your pre-migration efforts with modernizing and containerizing your asp.net, j2ee and MEAN stack apps. We specialize in both Docker on Windows and Docker on Linux.

How do you address security concerns for cloud hosted applications and data?

Our security checklist contains things your team may have thought about and some that they may not have! There’s so many networking aspects that can leave your cloud assets unprotected, that we offer a specialized checklist that goes over and above the standard list.

Our risk factor assessments addresses over 60 security risk factors including:

  • Cloud Risk Factor 1- Exposed Root Accounts and Not Rotating IAM Access Keys
  • Cloud Risk Factor 2 – Unrestricted inbound or outbound traffic
  • Cloud Risk Factor  3 – Unpatched Hosts
  • Cloud Risk Factor  4 – Unmonitored API Endpoints
  • Cloud Risk Factor  5 – Service Account Credentials in Code
  • Cloud Risk Factor 6 – Native KMS Keys as opposed to CMEK (Customer managed keys)
  • ……60 plus risk factors

Does Cloud Migration Architect work alone or with other consultants?

We usually work as a team. When the need arises, additional consultants are pulled in.

Does CloudMigrationArchitect.com bill by the hour or fixed price?

Certain cloud migration projects lend themselves to a fixed price bid, while others are billed based on Time and Material.
